This is a question we regularly get. Because ColourWell is 100% natural, we can truly say that our hair colorings do not contain PPD. But why do we get asked this question so often?
Misleading
Almost all hair dyes have a chemical composition. Even though the packaging looks natural, this does not mean that it is a 100% natural product. Phrases such as "Ammonia Free" or "Resorcinol Free" seem great but are misleading. There are many other chemicals that damage hair follicles and hair roots and cause skin irritation, such as peroxide and PPD.
It is distressing that so many hair dye products are being offered under the guise of "safe for your hair" or "naturally formulated". So people are misled and to avoid disappointment, the question of whether there is PPD in our hair colors is raised once again.
What is PPD?
If you are allergic to p-phenylenediamine (= PPD) and come into contact with it, this can lead to the development or worsening of eczema. It is therefore very important that you try to avoid contact with p-phenylenediamine as much as possible.
What does allergic contact dermatitis look like?
Allergic contact eczema is characterized by itchy, red skin lesions. The red skin may show pimples, flakes and blisters. The most common reaction to p-phenylenediamine and related substances is a contact allergic reaction to hair dyes, especially to so-called "permanent" hair dyes. The resulting eczema is not only localized on the hairy head, but often also on the face. The eyelids and ears can be quite swollen. Skin abnormalities can also develop elsewhere on the body.
